Modern Craftsman Kitchen

Modern Craftsman Kitchen

UPDATE 2023
We have lived here for 10 years now, and I can honestly say the kitchen cabinets are holding up very well (especially considering we are raising 3 kids here).

Even being white cabinets, they look pretty good after all these years. No fading at all, just the typically jammy handprints and coffee drips from normal family life. They wipe up easily. There have been a few water spills over the years that have warped the baseboards (MDF) and hopefully this summer we will replace those affected but honestly no one sees them as they are under the cabinets in the toe kick part.

The stove has held up well, just need one burner element replaced. Fridge, oven and built in microwave are also fingers crossed holding up well. The dishwasher needed to be replaced last year, after 9 good years of daily use, the motor gave out.

I would say one of the only negatives would be the cabinet under the sink has gotten some water damage and is showing some wear and tear. We love our apron front black sink but sometimes the water goes over the edge and drips down the front, like it could with any sink, but I think with the apron front, we don't notice it to wipe it up right away.

Still love the dark gray wall color (Sherwin Williams 7669 Summit Gray)

Since moving into the house about 8 weeks ago, the kitchen has been one of our favorite rooms. We have so much storage and so much space to prep food and cook. The kitchen can easily accommodate many people around the island. We still haven't filled many of the shelves and drawers!

The kitchen cabinets are a shaker style cabinet from Aristokraft. The door style for the white cabinets are called Winstead and the darker brown cabinets are Sinclair. We love how the wood floors warm up the modern feel of the kitchen.

The kitchen is very open from the dining room to allow for easy entertaining and socializing while preparing a meal. We have a large island with two ceramic pendants and a large bank of windows on the East wall.

One of the favorite areas of the kitchen would have to be the stove top that is almost like a fireplace hearth the way it surrounds the cooking area. We had always wanted a two tone kitchen, utilizing white cabinets as well as darker wood cabinets. Originally we had thought about darker cabinets for all the base cabinets and white for the uppers but we decided we liked more of the white and used the darker cabinets more sparingly.

To the left and right of the stove top we have a 12 inch counter top area and shallow cabinets up above. For the left side we have a simple spice rack and up above in the cabinet we have baking supplies.

We tried to keep the crown mouldings very simple in the kitchen to reflect the shaker cabinet style and craftsman heritage of our home. As we mentioned before our handles are all stainless steel pulls from IKEA. Their sleek profile fits in the kitchen very well and they were inexpensive at $7.99 for a two pack.

On either side of the stove top we have two cabinets the pull out and house all our cooking oils and spices. These cabinets are actually base cabinets with the toe kicks on the bottom cut off. This is the only area of the kitchen where the back splash tile goes all the way up the wall. We also have an exhaust fan and lighting up underneath the cabinet above the stove top.

This is the view of the kitchen when you walk in through the mudroom and pantry area. If you turned to the right you would walk towards the dining room. The island has been used almost everyday for food prep and since we don't have the dining room table we have been eating at the island too (while standing mind you, since we don't really have room for stools).

Next to the fridge we have a long area of counter top and prep space. We have been using it mostly for breakfast prep and the toaster sits over here most days. We have really enjoyed the back splash, it was the perfect style and color for our kitchen. The tile is made by Bliss, the color is Iceland and it has stone, matte and clear glass and white marble.

We found these awesome jars at Target for storing the flour and sugar. I love that these glass jars have a wide mouth at the top that makes scooping out of them really easy. They were one of the first accessories I bought for the new kitchen and they are functional and good looking!

In planning the kitchen we originally thought about having small cabinets on what is now the wall of windows. We are very glad we went with just windows on the East wall. We have plenty of storage in the kitchen (especially with the island and our walk in pantry). We just love how much light comes in and our beautiful view outside.

On the East wall we have our dishwasher and our amazing black cast iron farmhouse sink. The sink is by Kohler and will probably out live our great-great grand children! We have loved having this sink as part of our kitchen. Our only complaint is that because it is in a shiny black finish, it shows water spots like crazy. The only cure seems to be wiping out the sink each time you use it (not going to happen!)

In a few years when we finish the detached garage, the windows in the kitchen will look on the garage. We also have a really nice view of wildflowers and shrubs just beyond the driveway. Very enjoyable to look out when doing dishes and see so much wildlife and beauty.

We chose a stainless-steel goose neck faucet by Delta for the kitchen sink. It swivels to reach each side of the sink and the nozzle pulls out for even more reach. It has been a great detail in the kitchen and has been really handy for cleaning large pans and reach to the counter to fill a big pot of water.

There she is in all her white glossy cabinet glory! We have loved every minute in this kitchen so far and can't wait to make many memories with family and friends as we host parties and gatherings for many years.

  1. Hi Chelsea, Your kitchen looks great! I've been waiting to see some final pictures... I'm going through the same process and was shocked to see how similar our kitchens are. Same style cabinets, same countertop, even the same faucet! We're putting our backsplash in today and I'm getting very excited to move in... and seeing your pictures definitely adds to my excitement. Are your pulls 6"? We're getting the same style and the 3" pull we took home looks like they might be a little too small.

    1. Thanks Meghan! Our kitchen pulls are actually 9", we originally picked shorter ones and we thought the same thing, these might not work. We also have a 6 pulls that are 13" along the area where the stove is.
I know your blog is more about your marathons, but I would love to see a photo of your kitchen when its done! What does your back splash look like?

  2. I almost forgot about that blog, I haven't updated it in a while since I've been pouring all my free time into the house. Our backsplash is carrara marble subway tiles (looks like your backsplash also has some carrara marble in it). They finished laying the backsplash yesterday and it looks amazing. I've got a huge album up on facebook documenting the whole process. My squeeze and I are building it ourselves to save money and it's definitely been a labor of love. Feel free to add me on facebook, if you have it, and check out the album. My name is Meghan Bangs. We're still a couple weeks out from moving in but I add pictures frequently and I'll probably have pictures of our backsplash up this weekend.

  3. I came upon your kitchen photos and I love the look you have created! We have been in a slow..... kitchen re-do and my color scheme is very similar. I am currently trying to decide on what type of faucet to get, who would have thought that picking one out could be so stressful! I was wondering which Delta Faucet you had and if you were still happy with your choice? And your back-splash = GORGEOUS!

    1. Thank you so much for your kind words! We are thrilled with our kitchen and the backsplash is one of our favorite things in it. It really made our modern grey and white colors come together. As far as the sink faucet it is Delta Leland (9178-SS-DST). We have been happy with it so far. The pull out sprayer is nice and the whole thing swivels for filling large pots on the counter. Thank you again for liking our kitchen design! If you have any other questions regarding the kitchen or items we purchased let me know. Good luck on your reno!

  6. I love your kitchen! The wood floor looks fantastic, kind of wishing we went with that instead of tile we already bought! We are about to start ours and we have almost everything picked out already, but we are having trouble choosing a counter top. Do you mind telling me what your counter is? Colour/Make? It looks similar to what I'm trying to find.

    1. Thank you! The counter tops are granite, the color is "Steel Grey". Granite color can vary widely so I would suggest setting up a meeting at a site that carries that color granite and choosing your slab. Best of luck with the kitchen!

  10. Hi I just found your site while searching winstead white cabinets. I just had mine installed and my doors have a grayish hue to them and aren't "white". They are a few shades off from the base cabinet and trim. Did yours have this as well?

    1. Oh no, that's terrible! I would say our cabinets are true white. I think you need to call the manufacturer and see if they can send a rep out to take a look at the cabinets. Best of Luck!

    1. We are very happy with them. There is no visible wear on them as of yet and even though they are white, they never look dirty (and it's not as though I am cleaning them too often either!) One cabinet near to the ground actually did break off the track when our 20+ lbs baby climbed in the drawer repeatedly. It was a long skinny drawer.

  12. Hi I was wondering where you got your cabinets from? What brand are they? Also has it been difficult to keep White gloss cabinets clean?

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Fred! The cabinets are from Aristokraft and we purchased them through a local kitchen and bath showroom in Lansing, MI. I have been very happy with the white gloss look and I will admit it does show drips and splatters, it is very easy to wipe up. Just a quick wipe with a damp sponge or paper towel (even with a toddler wiping and licking on them!)

    1. Thanks Sarah! The kitchen is approximately 15 feet long by 12 feet wide. It has proven to be a good kitchen to gather around the island and multiple people can work and cook in the space without stepping on each other. This size kitchen is not too big and not too small, it's just right!

  15. Thanks Kristen! We have been so thrilled with how the kitchen looks and is holding up well! The floors are called "Mocha" Santa Barbara by Mohawk wide plank, hand scraped wood floors. Love them! We do have to sweep frequently to keep them looking clean just due to the fact that it is a medium/ dark stain. They installed quickly and look great with white trim. One down side, because they are a darker stain, they will show scratches and scuffs. We take a black sharpie pen and smudge it in any small scrapes and you can't tell after that. Hope that helps!

  16. How big is your island? How much space between it and the cabinets on each side? We are just designing a kitchen that will be very similar in layout and are debating whether or not we'll have space for an island.

  25. Beautiful kitchen! We are building our first house and just had our selection meeting a few days ago. I chose very similar looking cabinets, although we ended up going with the slightest gray tone to the white. It's called Sand Dollar. Dark countertops (though ours are not granite -- we'll have to upgrade down the road), very similar colored laminate flooring. The builder showed us similar cabinet hardware, but since the actual cabinet doors he had as samples were small squares, they looked disproportionate. But after finding your kitchen on Pinterest last night, I showed my husband and we both loved the look so I emailed the builder and asked him to switch them to these. So glad I found your photos so I could see what they would really look like! I've also spent months looking for a backsplash like yours but none of them seem to have the right shades of blue and gray. I'll keep looking. Even the faucet we chose is the same as yours! Very cool to see what ours will kind of look like. Thanks so much for the inspiration!

  30. Hi! Beautiful kitchen. I know this is an older post but hoping you'll still reply. My husband and I are remodeling our kitchen and I love how your cabinets vary in height levels. Could you tell me how many inches taller the cabinet above the fridge is to the cabinets next to it? I would like our cabinets heights to vary but am unsure how much space is too much space. Thanks!!

    1. I don't know for sure, but I think the cabinets are the same height. The ones over the fridge just stick out further than the others, so it looks like a different height in the picture.

The cabinets are holding up well especially considering three little kids!
The white does show food splatters but it’s not all bad, I wipe them off easily with a damp cloth.
The backsplash is called “bliss, and the color was Iceland ” but the tile company we got it from is out of business now. It is still available at other sites I have found online though! Search “backsplash bliss”.
It is so pretty even now 6 years later. It’s a mix of travertine, marble and glass.ours has more grey colors but I have seen other similar versions with different tones.
