Built in Fireplace with Shelves

We are finally in the home stretch of the house! Another week away from moving in to our dream home. We had a small set back this past week. Kyle and I went to visit the house (like we do every night after work) and I heard water dripping... not a good sound. Turns out we had a plumbing leak in the master bathroom, down to the bedroom on the first floor and to the basement. Awesome.

The leak had been found and repaired. A hole was cut in the wall behind our master bathroom vanity to get to the pipe and also a large hole in the ceiling of the downstairs bedroom. We just have to have the drywall guy mud and tape the hole and our painter will need to come back to repaint the ceiling in that area. On a positive note about the water leak incident: the carpet had not yet gone down in that room so no flooring was damaged.

I wanted to share an area of the living room with you that is 100% done and lookin' good. Our fireplace and built in shelves are perfect. I am really looking forward to putting books and pretty accessories on those white glossy shelves.

Staying true to our love of craftsman, the fireplace has clean lines and nice trim details.

We have 3 shelves on either side of the fireplace, plenty of room for all my pottery bowls and books! The shelves and all the trim in the house are painted with a glossy acrylic paint to make them really shine

Once the paper comes off the floor we will be able to see the gorgeous wide plank woods floors next to the white trim. We opted to go with an electric fireplace because we didn't want to add in propane since we already have geothermal as our heat source. Although I love the look and sound of a wood fireplace, I didn't want to deal with the clean up and messing with the indoor air quality

This tile was a bargain from Home Depot. We had been looking all over for the right tile (in our budget). The only tile I found I liked was $43 a sq ft (waaaayy out of our budget). These 12"x12" sheets were only $4.20 a sq ft. Score!

The moulding details really make the fireplace one of a kind. We designed the trim work with our carpenter. I found inspiration from other fireplaces I had cut from magazines or found on other blogs.

I can see us sitting in front of the fireplace, drinking hot cocoa. We will most likely be sitting on the floor for a while since we have zero living room furniture.

One day a flat screen TV will adorn the wall above the fireplace. Even though it will be a while before the living room design style comes together, I am just so pleased with how it looks. The finished product is just what we wanted.

  1. What is the name and maker of your wall paint color? I really like the warm tone and the contrast with your white shelves! Beautiful!

    1. Thank you! We like the color as well, although we would have gone one shade darker now that it's all said and done. Just our personal taste. The wall color is very warm but for more of a contrast with our white trim, I think a bit darker would have been better. All the paint colors in the house are Sherwin Williams. This living room wall color is called Bagel (SW 6114). Thanks for your comment!

  2. That's stunning! My husband and I are newlyweds too and are doing some pretty massive renovations to our house - we can completely relate to you and Kyle! We are in the process of refinishing our hardwoods and I'm trying to get him to install a craftsman-style fireplace just like this. Can I ask how tall your walls are behind the fireplace/bookshelves? Also, how tall is your fireplace mantel? I’m trying to decide whether to go with a traditional pre-made fireplace or build our own and just buy the insert. Thanks!!

    1. Thanks Kate! We love our fireplace and shelves! The wall behind is 9 feet tall, the fireplace portion in the center is 55 inches from top to bottom. The shelves on either side are 4 feet tall. We bought the insert from electricfireplacesdirect.com and I'm happy with how realistic it looks. Also we did 12 inches of tile all the way around the fireplace, so it took exactly 10 square feet of tile so it was cheap! Best of luck with the reno!

    1. I finally found it! The tile name is Dew Pointe offset tile. It was a close out tile and man was it inexpensive! It is a 1x1 inch square glass tiles set on a mesh back to make it 12x12 inches. The box that it came in said "Glass Mosaics" not sure if that is the brand or not. I did find it online just now too!

    1. Thank you! We bought the Dimplex BF33STP/DXP. It is all electric and we have a power switch up high on the wall (so little hands can't reach it!) The logs look quite realistic, we have been very happy with the choice.

  10. I can't believe I found your blog. My husband and I are building a home in northern Michigan about 10 miles north of his old hometown. I love your creative fireplace ideas and modern take on the Craftsman style. Also, thanks for sharing your paint color. Baby Nolan is probably a big boy now! Best wishes to you and your family.

  11. It's always been a dream to have a fireplace in my room, although I've heard it can mean that ironically it gets a little cold when you don't have it on! You've done a fantastic job with yours, thanks for the pictures!

    1. We put in an electric fireplace so it doesn't have any holes or air leaks to the outside but I would imagine if you had a wood burning one that would be true. I would think if you didn't have it on, air would come in through the chimney at least to some degree. With two small kids, we have been very happy with having the electric!

  13. That fireplace looks great! It's a wonderful focal point for the room. I like that you stayed true to your love of the craftsman style and portrayed that through the fireplace. I also like the built in shelves. That's a great way to incorporate extra storage!
