Shake it Up!

Picking out a shake color was not an easy task. Actually the whole process of choosing the exterior colors of the house was difficult. We had originally thought from the beginning that we would go with a grey-blue for the siding and grey for the cedar shingles. But as fate would have it, we had an opportunity to view the blue siding outside in the sunlight, and it was not pretty. Check out the red siding in our post Red siding, Yes Please!

We made some quick decisions and changed course to red. We love the red siding but we also needed a color for the cedar shingles that would play well with the red. We looked at our 4 top choices outside in the sunlight with our red siding.

We settled on a color called Shadow (it's the 3rd one down from the top). We were happy that we still liked it once it went on the house

As of today the front and sides of the house have gotten cedar shingles but the back of the house remains unfinished.

After the siding is all done the front porch columns will be transformed with stone. All the wood on the deck will either be wrapped with a product called LP smart trim or will be painted white

Here is the view of the West side of the house almost done. The final grade of the soil is happening right this moment so that Styrofoam layer on the basement will be covered up and we can finally have some stairs to get into the house

Late last week our decorative touches were added to the front of the house. We added a dentil shelf by the peak to mimic the dentil shelf on the front and side doors.

At the very top of the peak, just above the shelf, we will have the LP smart trim painted the same color as the cedar shingles

Currently the "corbels" or decorative brackets under the dentil shelf and the wrong size and shape. Unfortunately we need to wait maybe another week to get the correct corbels in and installed

Here is the East side of the house with the siding all completed. You may notice that between the windows have green looking tape, soon they will get trimmed out in white as will the side porch (shown above)

Love this corner view of the house! From this angle I can really picture it all done.

  1. Hello - Your house looks amazing! I just discovered your blog during our adventure in building our new house as well. I really like your red siding and cedar shakes combination. Is there any chance you could share with me what brand of siding and names of colors these are for the red, shakes, etc.? It'd be so helpful! Again, very nice home! Thanks, Brandon

    1. Thank you Brandon! The siding is by Norandex and the red color is called Great Barrier. The shakes that we used are by Foundry but I'm not certain of the color. We have been in the house for about 15 months now and all are holding up well and we are very happy with the colors! The red stand out great! Best of luck, let me know if I can answer any other questions!

  2. The picture of the west side of the house shows a wide horizontal "trim" board, at the bottom of the first floor. Do you have flashing at the top of that board - to keep rain from getting behind it? If so, what did you use?

    1. We actually don't have anything besides the house wrap behind it. It is aluminum fascia piece and it trims out the lower part of the house just before the ground and also between the second and first floors. We haven't had any issues with water, although the over hangs of our roof are so deep, we don't much water near the house at all. Truthfully, we don't have gutters on much of the house due to the deep over hangs. The siding that we used has something called "J" channel, that keeps them hooked together and allows the water to travel horizontally off the siding and keeps water diverted away from the house. The fascia piece is attached to that as well. Hope this helps!

  4. Chelsea, I LOVE your home! I was hoping that you would not mind sharing where you got the exterior dental moulding trim piece that was added above the window? We are currently building a home and I have not been able to find anything like it online. Thank you.

    1. It is a stained piece of cedar cut 6x6x10 in. and hung above. There is an over hang of 6 inches so the blocks are under that. The trim is called LP smart trim.
